Joseph Haines Obituary
Joseph Tallie Haines – age 76; a native of Columbus, GA and a resident of Mobile, AL died Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at his residence surrounded by his family. Mr. Haines was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph T. Haines, Sr.; and one sister, Eugenia Haines Shafer. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Jane Mitchell Haines; two children, Jennifer Haines Doolittle (Wally) and Joseph Talley Haines (Jackie); six grandchildren, Blake Mitchell Pobst (Haley), Delaney Doolittle Olson (Mike), Cody Doolittle, Elle Doolittle, Melaina Haines, and Maria Haines; four great-grandchildren, Emma Pobst, Aiden Bridges, Carson Pobst, and Charlie Wayne Olson; one sister, Brenda McVey; his beloved dog, Molly; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Joey Haines, or Coach Haines as he was known by so many, embodied quiet and humble leadership in all perspectives of his life. While he is most widely known for his notable success as a track and field coach for Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO), those close to him knew that the characteristics which he was most proudly defined by were his devotion to God, first and foremost, and a deep love for his wife, Jane, children, grandchildren and family (the definition of which extended to include all of his beloved athletes).
While the majority of Joey's professional career was spent at SEMO (from which he retired in 2008 after 26 years), he also coached at his alma mater, Lipscomb University, Austin Peay State University, and Franklin High School. A brief list of his accolades as a coach include being inducted into several Halls of Fame including the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Ohio Valley Conference Hall of Fame, the Missouri Track and Field Coaches Hall of Fame, and the Drake Relays Hall of Fame. He also received the honor of Coach of the Year by numerous outlets that spanned his career.
Joey served as a Deacon at the Cape Girardeau Church of Christ, where he and Jane were faithful members for many years before moving to Mobile, Alabama where they have been members at Regency Church of Christ.
After retirement, Joey and Jane bought a farm, named it Redhawk Ridge Ranch and started what his family jokingly called his "goat track team," where he combined his love for the outdoors, developing a winning team, and spending time with Jane into one pastime. Although Parkinson's Disease ultimately made the physical demands of coaching a farm too difficult, Joey maintained a steadfast positive outlook, and took every opportunity available to tell people how blessed he was, and to express the depth of his gratitude for a life meaningfully lived. Joey passed peacefully in his home surrounded by his family.

The family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until 11:30 A.M. on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at Ascension Funeral Home, 1016 Hillcrest Road, Mobile, Alabama 36695. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mobile Christian School, 5900 Cottage Hill Road, Mobile, Alabama 36609, or www.mobilechristian.org.
